A Short Tale of the MineSweeper Kind!

Minesweeper Part 3

Chapter 5: All your mines are belong to us

Lee heard the unmistakable laughter that was Mr Smiley hovering above his head. "Gosh darn it, he’s actually enjoying this." Said Lee. He dropped to his knees on the stone column and began to think hard about the situation.

"Right, I have done this once before... need to think back to the last time I played. The last thing I remember was... yes, that’s right. There were 2 squares remaining, I didn’t have much time so I clicked the left one, that is the last thing I remember."

Lee got to his feet slowly and completed the rest of the grid until he was left with only 2 squares. Now, if Lee had done this once before, you would think that he would be certain that the left column contained the mine - but you do not know Mr Smiley. Lee knew there was a possibility Mr Smiley had switched the mine to the other column.

"Grr..." was all Lee could say. He then looked upright into the face of Mr Smiley - he was grinning like never before. "What’s wrong Lee, too scared to choose a square?" He said in a very mocking tone. Mr Smiley descended from the sky until he was face to face with Lee. "If you cannot choose, you’ll be stuck here... forever, or until you wake up."

Lee tried to block out the sadistic taunts of Mr Smiley. He concentrated as hard as he could.

"Which one should I choose? Damn, this is just like Russian roulette, with mines."

"How do you expect me to choose when I only have a 25 percent chance of choosing the right column?!" Lee took several steps back and looked left to right, and left again. He took a deep breath and prepared to jump, he had made his decision.

Lee ran forward and leapt into the air, everything seems to be going in slow motion - like another one of those cheap matrix rip-offs. Lee landed on the left pillar. He closed his eyes and waited and waited some more, silence. He opened his eyes and looked down, he saw a number. He was safe!

"NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!" Screamed Mr Smiley "You... won! I don’t believeeeeeee it!" These were Mr Smiley’s last words. His head quickly expanded to 10 times it’s normal size - almost as big as Tony’s.
Shortly after, he exploded into one thousand little pieces which all fell into the great void, never to return unless I decide to have a sequel. Then there was a flash of light, and Lee awoke.

Epilogue

The next night Lee slept soundly. Lee was finally free from corruption and other nasty stuff brought unto him by the evil Mr Smiley who was banished into oblivion. Weeks later, Lee’s life was taking a turn for the better. He became a successful businessman despite not knowing a single thing about business. He made dozens of new friends and got a girlfriend named Bob who he intended to marry in September.

One day though, Lee was shopping for a new mobile phone in PC world for his girlfriend when he saw a new computer on display. He walked over to check it out and couldn’t help but go to the games section and click upon 'Minesweeper'. He was not afraid to do so though since he knew the diabolical Mr Smiley was gone forever. When the program had opened, it was just as Lee had suspected - there was a big grey square where Mr Smiley’s icon normally resided. Lee walked away from the computer and returned to the mobile phone section. He was stopped in his tracks however when he heard a voice behind him.
"Psst..." It said. Lee quickly turned around and walked back to the computer. Minesweeper was still open and... there was a smiley face in the grey box!
"How could this be?!" screamed Lee. He studied the smiley face harder. It looked like Mr Smiley, but something was different. There was a bow on to of the face’s head and the lips seemed to be smeared with red… lipstick. Just then the face spoke again.
"Good afternoon Lee. My name is Mrs Smiley, pleased to meet you."

The End?
